videos of the meetings, I read the minutes, as I have in past years. There are a couple things that stand
out to me as being very hypocritical and causes me to doubt the ethical behavior of the current
members of the town board.
This past meeting of August 12, 2017 brought this way of thinking to a very clear point for me. While I
look at each member, I see Cynthia Hyde, former Town Clerk and acting current Supervisor sitting
there now praising Mr. Fred Engelmann and Whitespace, proudly stating that someone chose to come
to Thurman because of Whitespace. However, since the very beginning of this project, Mrs. Hyde has
been very vocal against Whitespace and extremely vocal against the previous administration that
implemented the project. Mrs. Hyde was also many times very vocal against Mr. Engelmann, however
now seems to sing his praises. Councilwoman Kathy Templeton was very vocal in her support for
Whitespace in the beginning but then changed her opinion against it and now it seems since she was
made liaison of the project, seems to think extremely high if it again. This of course seems to be the
way Mrs. Templeton handles most things, depending on what soap box she decides she wants to stand
on at the time which will make her look best in the public's eye. Councilman Mike Eddy, Mr. Eddy has
been very vocal against everything and to this day continues to blame the “past administration” for
everything which includes Whitespace. Mr. Eddy was totally against Mr. Engelmann as well, but now
has no issue paying the man over $8000.00 which he was not owed in this taxpayers eyes. Mr. Eddy is
hoping people over look the fact that he has been part of the town's administration for the last four
years, four very long years may I add. Mr. Eddy hasn't done one thing to help this town as a board
member, doing the new sidewalk for the town hall this year, to me, is too little too late and even that he
managed to not do to code and it had to be fixed. Councilwoman Joan Harris, seems to just like to talk
about the past and is very content in belittling people that try to speak. I find Mrs. Harris to be
cantankerous in nature and not a person that I would feel comfortable speaking with. This board has
now done a complete flip about Whitespace and seem to think they are the reason it is working
successfully, hmmm I think they are looking through the same pair of rose colored glasses on that one.
Whitespace was a risk for sure, but a risk I think our town needed to take. The previous administration
did a very good job as far as I am concerned, and no, I am not a Whitespace subscriber. With all new
projects, there are going to be bugs to be worked out and things to learn along the way, but the big
picture was correct. Whitespace is up and running successfully. For that I think everyone should agree
there needs to be a big thank you to the previous administration and yes to Mr. Engelmann as well for
constructing it. I take issue with his ethics for the way he handled trying to get more money than his
contract called for, but the fact that he built the system and that it is a success can not be taken away
from him or from our previous Supervisor Evelyn Wood for taking the risk for our town.
So, I am assuming that we can all expect an admission from our current board that Whitespace is good
for our town, it works, and yes there are going to be issues as with anything else when it comes to
repairs, but it is a success. Now that this board is in charge of it, it seems they enjoy taking the credit
for it. As far as for Mr. Engelmann's praises by Cynthia Hyde and Kathy Templeton for all of the hard
work Mr. Engelmann is doing helping them fix an issue that took five weeks to fix and not asking for a
dime to date, well, for that I say Mr. Engelmann got an extra $8000.00 from our tax dollars, so I would
say he was paid for his time now.
My next point I would like to make is about the tax levy over ride. This resolution was passed at this
same meeting as well. Now we all know that this is done just about every year by most governmental
administrations, it is just something that you have to be in the realm of reality with, that there are times
when the budget just can not be kept below the tax cap. Cynthia Hyde, Joan Harris, Kathy Templeton
and Mike Eddy all agreed at this past meeting that this doesn't mean they are going to raise taxes, this
is just something has needs to be done in case, as it has been done in years past. Let us rewind time
back to last July of 2016. There was a public hearing for over riding the tax cap, the same exact thing
that was just done was done then. Evelyn Wood, Supervisor at the time, stated numerous times, that this
did not mean that taxes would be raised, that this was just a precautionary measure because the tax rate
was so low for the town. In fact, taxes were not raised and many people received the rebate check from
the state that you only get when your town does stay below this tax cap.
When looking at the meeting minutes from last year and listening to the meeting video, it is amazing
how much some of these same people that are now sitting at the board table and fine with over riding
the tax cap. It is in the minutes that Kathy Templeton was against it, yet now she smiles and agrees this
is standard practice. Mr. Eddy's wife, mother and son-in-law were all very vocal against it, in fact Mr.
Eddy's son-in-law screamed at the board and said he paid his taxes and he can sit there and give the
board crap if he wants too, let's see if he does the same this year to this board, who is doing the exact
The fact is, we all need to be scared this year, as there has been so much un-neccessary spending by
this board, spending which was not in the budget, yet they had no issue writing check after check, that
there is no way they will be able to keep the budget under the tax cap. So, I know I will be sitting down
when I get my tax bill in January and I won't expect a rebate check next year either. Is Mr. Eddy, Mrs.
Hyde, Mrs. Templeton and Mrs. Harris going to give us all a rebate check for their blundering as a
town board?? I think not.
The fact is, this board has done nothing but take credit for taking care of issues that we 99% taken care
of by the past administration, spent money that this town did not have and play the blame game the
whole year. I for one will not be voting for any of them!! This town can not afford another year let
alone more with these people running this town.
Last fact, they haven't even started the budget process!! Folks, this is something that should have been
started back in August! I am sure they will need to hire a CPA to do this work as well, since Mrs. Hyde
had to hire one to do her job so far this year.
Yes, this taxpayer is more than a little fed up and I will not apologize for it.
