While at the March regular meeting these comments of the Town Attorney’s at face value were especially diplomatic; they do not appear to fully represent the views that he has entertained in the past. In 2016 the Town Attorney, at the sole request of Councilman Eddy, provided the Councilman with expensive legal advice at the Town’s expense tailored to Councilman Eddy’s particular concerns regarding the rest of the Board. In January of 2017; the Town Attorney appeared at a secret, off-the-record, meeting with Councilwomen Hyde, Templeton, and Councilman Eddy wherein the Attorney provided unknown legal advice. In January of this year, the Attorney provided Supervisor Hyde with expensive legal advice tailored to her specific questions concerning a sheaf of resolutions submitted to her for inclusion in the agenda for the Town’s organizational meeting. At the organizational meeting that same month, the Attorney, with his assistant, appeared before the Board and the sole request of Supervisor Hyde to provide statements that were used by the Supervisor to represent her policy positions in regards to resolutions proposed by Councilwoman Seaman.
The Town Attorney’s past communications with the Town and its various officials indicates that he hasn’t always held the opinion that it was unprofessional and unethical for him to advise the Board as a whole or members of the same on legal matters concerning other members of the Town government; however, when appearing before the Board in March of this year at the Board’s request, the Attorney appears to be incapable of advising the Board on how to deal with a rouge Supervisor. In light of this incapacity; the Town acted on the Attorney’s advice and officially commenced a search for new representation for the Town.
