We had a Supervisor who was well educated, work endlessly for our town, has kept our taxes at a very low rate for years. She spent countless hours at the County meetings working on getting funding for our town. She was able to get the Combs Rd. Bridge repaired from the damage from Hurricane Irene, for very little cost to the taxpayers. Evelyn Wood sacrificed countless hours away from her family and small children to make our town a better place to live. I have heard people say that Evelyn came across as harsh and off putting. What they didn't do, is even try to get to know her for the person she was. Even if they didn't want to go that far, what they should not forget is the good she has done for this town, while enduring endless personal attacks on her character against her personal safety as well as being turned into the police for an unfounded accusation of stealing town funds. She was actually once called out of a county meeting by police to be questioned! This all came from the people that wanted nothing more than to see Evelyn thrown out of office.
The same group of people came to every meeting accusing Evelyn and the board at the time of all kinds of things, from bankrupting our town, to wasting town funds expanding the internet for a section of this town that would not have it otherwise. This same group supported Cynthia Hyde and Kathy Templeton. Watching these two women at the Meet the Candidates night, they came across as two who wanted people to believe they would work endlessly for the "people" of Thurman. It took them a matter of minutes to make a mockery of this town at the Organizational Meeting in January. The first thing they did was get rid of procedures. Councilman Mike Eddy arm in arm with them. Anything that they didn't like personally, they changed. They did not care why the procedures were set in place to begin with, they just wanted their own way. They then began procedures to remove the Deputy Supervisor position. This was an unpaid position, at the time it was Susan Shepler in this position. Not only did Susan have experience in municipal bookkeeping, she knew the accounting software and could keep the day to day operations running smoothly in a case where the Supervisor could not. She had in fact done so at the end of 2016 when Supervisor Evelyn Wood was ill and had to take time off to get well. They did not care, all they wanted was to dictate to the Supervisor and make her their puppet. They found this to be a game. It was not. In January, Supervisor Wood resigned, she was not going to sit by and have her name be the one signed on the dotted line holding the bag, for things that they wanted that were not only the wrong things for this town, but some were illegal. On January 20th, Evelyn resigned. Susan Shepler chaired the beginning of the meeting that same night. If she had been left in her position, our town would not be in the financial ruin it is now in. Did the new board members care?? Not in the least. They had a personal vendetta and nothing was going to stop them. Cynthia Hyde made the motion to do away with the Deputy Supervisor position. The motion passed, with three votes for yes from Cynthia Hyde, Kathy Templeton and Mike Eddy. One board member, John Youngblood voted no. He was the only one with any integrity still on that board. Before the end of that meeting, he too would resign.
The new board did not expect Evelyn Wood to resign, I have no doubt that they wanted to have fun seeing her have to do what they said. Cynthia lost an election for town supervisor against Evelyn Wood in 2015. I personally heard many people say, Cynthia is a nice enough person, but she certainly does not have what it takes to run a town. Well the new board did just that, they put Cynthia Hyde in as acting Supervisor. They appointed Joan Harris, who also lost an election in 2015, to fill John Youngbloods seat. They did away with procedures that were set in place to protect the taxpayers money. They have since appointed their friends and supporters to positions for the town. They rescinded the sole assessor that had already been approved by the state, and placed their friend and supporter Tuck Birdsall, whom many people in this town have issues with from his previous elected time as Assessor. They created a position that did not exist for Susan Baker, to now be the Clerk to the Assessor. They split the budgeted amount between the two, giving Susan Baker a much larger salary, which would mean the taxpayers would have to pay more in NYS retirement for her. Their most recent appointment was to their very vocal supporter, Keith Parent, to a temporary position at the landfill. Never asking for letters of interest, but using letters from a previous time which they never acted on. The board also changed the hours of the landfill on Wendesdays to accommodate Mr. Parents schedule. Mr. Parent was also appointed to the Board of Assessment Review board. Yes, it seems that voting for these candidates certainly has been profitably for some.
